Vans is an iconic American brand that has become a global staple in the skateboarding and action sports community. Founded in 1966 by Paul Van Doren, James Van Doren, and Gordon Lee, the company opened its first store in Anaheim, California, under the name The Van Doren Rubber Company. The brand's unique direct-to-consumer manufacturing model and the grippy rubber 'waffle' sole quickly made it a favorite among Southern California's emerging skate scene.
Over the decades, Vans transformed from a local shoe manufacturer into a worldwide lifestyle brand. While it began with domestic production in California, the modern manufacturing footprint is global. Today, Vans products are primarily manufactured in several Asian countries, including Vietnam, China, and Cambodia, to meet international demand.
Ownership of the brand transitioned significantly in 2004 when it was acquired by the VF Corporation, a massive American apparel and footwear conglomerate. Under the stewardship of VF Corporation, Vans has expanded its reach far beyond the skate park, cementing its status as a leading name in music, art, and street culture while maintaining its heritage as an original 'Off the Wall' brand.
