Burger King was founded in 1953 as Insta-Burger King in Jacksonville, Florida, by Keith G. Cramer and Matthew Burns. The brand as it is known today was revitalized and renamed by David Edgerton and James McLamore in 1954 in Miami. Since its inception, the company has grown into one of the world's most recognizable fast-food chains, famous for its signature flame-grilled Whopper sandwich.
Over the decades, ownership has shifted through several hands, including The Pillsbury Company, Grand Metropolitan, and Diageo. Following a period of private equity ownership, the Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital acquired Burger King in 2010. In 2014, the brand merged with the Canadian company Tim Hortons to form Restaurant Brands International (RBI), which remains the ultimate parent company. While RBI is headquartered in Canada, Burger King maintains its operational headquarters in Miami, Florida. Most locations are operated by independent franchisees around the world.
