Burger King is an American multinational chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, founded in 1953 as Insta-Burger King in Jacksonville, Florida. After financial difficulties, it was acquired by David Edgerton and James McLamore in 1959, who rebranded it as Burger King. Over the years, the company underwent several ownership changes, including a significant acquisition by the Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital in 2010. In 2014, 3G Capital merged Burger King with the Canadian coffeehouse chain Tim Hortons to form Restaurant Brands International (RBI), a Canadian-American multinational fast food holding company. RBI also owns Popeyes and Firehouse Subs. As of 2024, Burger King operates over 19,000 restaurants worldwide, with the majority being franchised. The brand is known for its flame-grilled burgers, particularly the Whopper, which has been a signature item since 1957.
