Newcastle Brown Ale, often referred to as 'The Dog' by locals, is a iconic dark ale originally brewed in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. First released in 1927 by Colonel Jim Porter, it became one of the most recognizable British beer brands globally, known for its unique clear glass bottle and blue star logo representing the five founding breweries of the city.
While its origins are deeply rooted in North East England, production moved from the Tyne Brewery to Dunston in 2005, and later to Tadcaster. In a significant shift for the North American market, brewing for United States consumption was moved to the Netherlands and later to the United States (under Lagunitas) to ensure freshness and logistical efficiency. However, it remains a quintessential British brand in identity.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned through major corporate mergers. Originally part of Scottish & Newcastle, the brand was acquired by the Dutch brewing giant Heineken N.V. in 2008. Today, Heineken maintains ultimate ownership, managing the brand through its extensive global distribution network while preserving the traditional recipe and heritage associated with its Tyneside roots.
