H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) is a globally recognized leader in the fast-fashion industry, known for making stylish apparel accessible to a wide audience. Founded in 1947 by Erling Persson in Västerås, Sweden, the brand originally started as a women's clothing store called 'Hennes' (Swedish for 'Hers'). After acquiring the hunting and fishing equipment retailer Mauritz Widforss in 1968, the brand expanded into menswear and was renamed Hennes & Mauritz.
Today, H&M operates a vast distributed manufacturing model. While the brand is Swedish, it does not own its own factories. Instead, it collaborates with over 600 independent suppliers across the globe. Production is primarily concentrated in Asia and Europe, with major manufacturing hubs located in Bangladesh, China, Turkey, and India. This diverse supply chain allows the company to respond rapidly to changing fashion trends while maintaining competitive pricing.
As the flagship brand of the H&M Group, it sits alongside other notable labels such as COS, Monki, and & Other Stories. The company remains headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, and continues to be influenced by the Persson family, who maintain a significant ownership stake. The brand focuses on a strategy of 'democratic fashion,' balancing sustainability initiatives with high-volume retail across nearly 70 markets worldwide.
