Häagen-Dazs is an American ice cream brand founded by Reuben and Rose Mattus in 1961 in the Bronx, New York. The brand is known for its super-premium ice cream, which is dense and made with high butterfat content, using no emulsifiers or stabilizers other than egg yolks. In 1983, the brand was acquired by the Pillsbury Company, which later became part of General Mills. Häagen-Dazs products are manufactured in multiple countries, including France, the United States, and Japan. In the United States and Canada, the brand is licensed to Froneri, a joint venture between Nestlé and PAI Partners. In Japan, Häagen-Dazs products are produced by a joint venture between Häagen-Dazs, Suntory, and Takanashi Milk. The brand's name was created to evoke an aura of European tradition and quality, despite being an American creation.
