Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream

Häagen-Dazs is a renowned premium ice cream brand with a unique and complex ownership structure. While the name sounds Scandinavian, it is actually an American creation established in 1960 by Reuben and Rose Mattus in The Bronx, New York. The founders coined the name to sound Danish as a tribute to Denmark’s treatment of Jews during World War II, though the name itself is nonsensical and the letters used do not even exist in the Danish language.

Today, the brand's manufacturing is geographically split. In the United States and Canada, the ice cream is produced and marketed by Froneri (a joint venture between Nestlé and PAI Partners). For the rest of the world, including Europe and Asia, the brand is owned and operated by General Mills. Much of the international supply is manufactured at a specialized facility in Tilloy-lès-Mofflaines, France, allowing the brand to use the 'Made in France' label as a hallmark of quality for its global markets.

Ownership transitioned through several major corporations over the decades. It was first sold to The Pillsbury Company in 1983, which was later acquired by General Mills in 2001. Due to a series of licensing agreements and joint ventures, the rights to the brand remain divided between General Mills (International) and Froneri (North America) through the 2020s and beyond.
