Château Calon-Ségur is a renowned winery located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of the Bordeaux wine region in France. Classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification, it is celebrated for producing high-quality red wines. The estate's history dates back to the Gallo-Roman period, and its name is derived from the French term 'Calones,' referring to small transport vessels used on the Gironde estuary. In the 18th century, the estate was owned by Nicolas-Alexandre, Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Château Latour and Château Lafite. Despite his ownership of these First Growths, the Marquis expressed a deep affection for Calon-Ségur, stating, 'I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon Ségur.' This sentiment is symbolized by the heart drawn around the château's name on the wine label. The estate remained under the management of the Gasqueton family from 1894 until 2012, when it was acquired by Suravenir Assurances, an insurance company based in France. Suravenir Assurances is a subsidiary of the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group, a major French banking and insurance conglomerate. The winery is known for its robust and complex red wines, primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot grapes. These wines are characterized by their firm tannins, deep flavors, and exceptional aging potential. The estate's terroir, consisting of gravel soils over clay subsoils, contributes to the distinctive minerality and depth of the wines. The current consulting oenologist is Éric Boissenot, who oversees the winemaking process to ensure the production of high-quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the Saint-Estèphe terroir.
