7-Eleven is the world's largest convenience store chain, originally founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1927. Initially named Tote'm Stores, the company changed its name to 7-Eleven in 1946 to reflect its then-unprecedented operating hours (7 a.m. to 11 p.m.).
While the brand was born in the United States, it underwent a significant shift in ownership during the late 20th century. After a period of financial restructuring, the Japanese affiliate, Ito-Yokado, acquired a controlling interest in the company. Today, the brand is fully owned by Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd., a massive Japanese retail group.
Manufacturing of 7-Eleven branded products, such as snacks and beverages, takes place in various countries depending on the local market and regional license agreements. The brand operates through a combination of corporate-owned stores and franchise models globally.
