König Pilsener, often associated with the name 'König' (the German word for King), is one of Germany's most iconic premium pilsner brands. The brand was established in 1858 by Theodor König in the town of Duisburg-Beeck, located in western Germany. While many breweries of the era focused on top-fermented beers, Theodor König was a pioneer in brewing bottom-fermented pilsner-style lager, a more complex and demanding process at the time.
Over the decades, the König Brewery grew from a regional producer into a national market leader, famously known for its slogan 'Heute ein König' (Today a King). The production remains centered at the original site in Duisburg, where it continues to adhere to the German Beer Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot), utilizing high-quality water from nature reserves and proprietary yeast cultures.
In 2004, the König Brewery underwent a significant change in ownership when it was acquired by the Bitburger Brewery Group (Bitburger Braugruppe GmbH), one of the largest private brewery groups in Germany. Today, the brand remains a flagship within the Bitburger portfolio and is exported to over 40 countries worldwide, maintaining its reputation as a benchmark for German pilsner brewing.
