Becel is a prominent brand of margarine and plant-based spreads with a history rooted in cardiovascular health. Originally developed by Unilever in the 1960s following medical requests for a healthier alternative to butter, the brand name is derived from the initials 'B.C.L.' (Blood Cholesterol Lowering).
In 2018, Unilever sold its entire spreads division to Upfield, a global leader in plant-based nutrition backed by the private equity firm KKR. While the brand originated in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, it is currently manufactured in various facilities across Europe to serve local markets. In Portugal, the product is distributed by Upfield Portugal, ensuring that the spreads remain a staple in European diets as a vegan-friendly, dairy-free alternative.
