Franziskaner Weissbier is one of the most prominent traditional German wheat beers, with roots tracing back to 1363 in Munich. The brand's name is derived from the Franciscan monastery located near the original brewery site. Over centuries, the brand evolved through various mergers, most notably becoming part of the Spaten-Franziskaner-Brauerei in the 1920s.
The beer continues to be brewed in accordance with the Bavarian Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot), primarily at the Spaten-Franziskaner brewery in Munich. While it remains a quintessentially German product in terms of heritage and production, its ownership has transitioned to a global scale. Today, the brand is part of the Spaten-Franziskaner-Löwenbräu Group, which is owned by the world's largest brewing company, Anheuser-Busch InBev. This ownership has allowed Franziskaner to maintain its traditional brewing standards while reaching a massive international audience.
