Pilsner Urquell is a landmark brand in the history of brewing, famously known as the world's first pale lager. It was first brewed in 1842 in Plzeň (Pilsen), located in what is now the Czech Republic. The brand is credited with giving its name to the 'Pilsner' style of beer, which has since become the most popular style of beer globally.
Historically, the brewery was state-owned during the communist era but was later privatized. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it belonged to the South African Breweries (later SABMiller). Following the massive merger between AB InBev and SABMiller, the brand was divested to meet regulatory requirements.
Today, Pilsner Urquell is the flagship brand of Plzeňský Prazdroj, which is owned by the Japanese conglomerate Asahi Group Holdings. Despite its global ownership, the beer is still brewed exclusively in the original brewery in Plzeň, Czech Republic, using traditional methods and local ingredients like Saaz hops and soft Plzeň water to maintain its authentic flavor profile.
