KitKat is a globally recognized chocolate-covered wafer bar that has become a cultural icon since its debut in the early 20th century. Originally launched in the United Kingdom in 1935 as Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp, the name was later changed to Kit Kat in 1937, allegedly inspired by the Kit-Cat Club. The brand's famous 'Have a break, have a KitKat' slogan was introduced in 1957 and remains one of the most successful advertising campaigns in the food industry.
Today, the manufacturing of KitKat is a massive global operation. It is produced in 16 different countries, including the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Japan, Brazil, and China. This widespread production allows the brand to cater to diverse local tastes, most notably in Japan, where hundreds of unique seasonal and regional flavors—ranging from green tea and sake to wasabi—have been developed, turning the snack into a popular souvenir and good-luck charm.
The ownership of KitKat is unique due to historical licensing agreements. While the Swiss multinational Nestlé acquired Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988 and owns the brand globally, the rights to manufacture and distribute KitKat in the United States are held by The Hershey Company under a long-term license. This dual-ownership structure means that KitKat bars sold in North America differ slightly in recipe and packaging from those found in the rest of the world, though the brand remains unified under its distinctive red logo.
