Despite its name, the product did not originate in Philadelphia; it was actually invented in 1872 in Chester, New York, by dairyman William Lawrence. The name was adopted in 1880 as a marketing strategy, as the city of Philadelphia was renowned at the time for its high-quality dairy farms and 'Philadelphia-style' cream products.

Today, the brand's ownership is split geographically due to various corporate mergers and spin-offs. In North America (USA and Canada), the brand is owned and manufactured by Kraft Heinz. In most other international markets, including Europe and many parts of Asia, the brand is owned by Mondelez International. Manufacturing occurs in several locations worldwide to serve local markets, such as Lowville, New York, for the US market and Fallingbostel, Germany, for the European market.
