M&M's were first introduced in the United States in 1941 by Forrest Mars Sr., who was inspired by a method used during the Spanish Civil War that allowed soldiers to carry chocolate without it melting. The brand's name stands for 'Mars & Murrie,' representing the partnership between Forest Mars and Bruce Murrie, the son of Hershey’s president. The 'Crispy' variety shown here was originally launched in 1999 and features a puffed rice center coated in milk chocolate and the signature candy shell.
Today, M&M's are manufactured globally in facilities located in the United States, France, and Poland, among others, to serve different regional markets. The brand remains a cornerstone of Mars, Incorporated, a global, family-owned company headquartered in McLean, Virginia. Mars has continued to evolve the brand through diverse flavor innovation and a globally recognized marketing campaign featuring the iconic 'Spokescandies.'
