Mateus The Original Rosé

Mateus Rosé is one of Portugal's most iconic beverage exports, easily recognized by its distinctive flask-shaped bottle inspired by World War I soldiers' canteens. Created in 1942 by Fernando van Zeller Guedes, the wine was designed to be a fresh, light, and slightly sparkling beverage that would appeal to international palates, particularly in the UK and USA. The brand became a global phenomenon in the mid-20th century, reportedly even being a favorite of Queen Elizabeth II and Jimi Hendrix.

Historically, the wine is produced in the Vila Real region of northern Portugal. It is made from a variety of Portuguese red grapes, such as Baga, Rufete, Tinta Barroca, and Touriga Franca, using white wine fermentation techniques to achieve its signature pink hue.

Today, the brand remains under the stewardship of the founding family through their company, Sogrape Original Legacies. Sogrape has grown into Portugal's largest wine producer with a significant global footprint, maintaining the brand's heritage while diversifying its portfolio to include Vinhos Verdes and sparkling varieties of Mateus.
