Marabou is one of Sweden’s most beloved chocolate brands, established in 1916 by the Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst. Holst had already found success with the Freia brand in Norway and sought to expand his chocolate empire into Sweden. The name 'Marabou' was chosen because the Freia trademark was already registered in Sweden, and the marabou stork was the symbol of the original Freia company.
Today, Marabou is synonymous with Swedish confectionery culture, particularly its iconic 'Mjölkchoklad' (Milk Chocolate). While the brand maintains its deep Swedish roots and its factory in Upplands Väsby, its ownership has transitioned through major international mergers. Since the early 1990s, the brand has been under the global umbrella of Mondelēz International.
The manufacturing process continues to follow the specific Swedish recipes that distinguish Marabou from international counterparts, characterized by a unique caramelized flavor profile. While Sweden remains the primary heart of production, some specialized lines or formats may be produced in other European facilities owned by the parent corporation.
