Havana Club is a renowned rum brand originating from Cuba, first produced in 1934 by José Arechabala S.A. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the brand was nationalized. In 1993, Pernod Ricard, a French company, and the Cuban government established a joint venture called Corporación Cuba Ron to produce and export Havana Club rum globally, except to the United States due to the embargo. Bacardi, a company with Cuban roots, acquired the original recipe from the Arechabala family and began producing its version of Havana Club in Puerto Rico in 1994, selling it in the U.S. market. This has led to ongoing legal disputes between Bacardi and Pernod Ricard over the rights to the Havana Club name. The primary owner of Havana Club is the French company Pernod Ricard, which operates the brand through its joint venture with the Cuban government. Bacardi produces its own version of Havana Club rum in Puerto Rico, which is sold in the United States.
