HP Sauce is an iconic British condiment that has been a staple in households since its creation in the late 19th century. Developed by Frederick Gibson Garton, a grocer from Nottingham, the recipe was famously named 'HP' after the Houses of Parliament, as Garton heard that the sauce had begun to be served in the parliamentary restaurant.
In 2005, the brand was acquired by the American food giant Heinz. Shortly after the acquisition, production was controversially moved from the historic Aston Cross factory in Birmingham, England, to a facility in Elst, Netherlands. Today, HP Sauce remains one of the most popular brown sauces internationally, maintained under the global portfolio of Kraft Heinz.
