Play-Doh Modeling Compound

Play-Doh is one of the world's most iconic modeling compounds, with a history that began unexpectedly as a cleaning product. Invented in the 1930s by Kutol Products in Cincinnati, Ohio, the substance was originally intended to clean soot and coal residue from wallpaper. However, as home heating shifted from coal to gas and electricity, demand for the cleaner plummeted. In the mid-1950s, the formula was repurposed as a children's toy after a teacher discovered how much kids enjoyed playing with the malleable dough. It was officially rebranded as Play-Doh in 1956 and has since become a global staple in arts and crafts.

Today, the brand is owned by the American toy and entertainment giant Hasbro, which acquired it through the purchase of Tonka (and its Kenner brand) in 1991. While Play-Doh was manufactured exclusively in the United States for many decades, production eventually shifted overseas. In the current 2026 market, manufacturing is globalized, primarily occurring in China and Turkey, though Hasbro reintroduced some domestic production to Massachusetts in 2018 to meet growing North American demand. The product remains a cornerstone of Hasbro's portfolio, frequently appearing in themed sets and creative playsets licensed through major partners like Disney.
