Burger King is a globally recognized American multinational chain of fast food restaurants. Founded in 1953 as Insta-Burger King in Jacksonville, Florida, the brand became legendary for its 'flame-grilled' cooking method and its signature burger, the Whopper. After experiencing financial difficulties, the company was purchased by David Edgerton and James McLamore in 1954, who renamed it Burger King and laid the foundation for its international expansion.

Today, Burger King operates thousands of locations across the globe. While the core brand identity and menu standards are maintained by the parent company, almost all locations are owned and operated by independent franchisees. This means that while the recipes and brand standards are American, the actual production and assembly of the food occur locally in each country where a restaurant is situated, utilizing a mix of local and imported ingredients.

Since 2010, the brand has undergone significant corporate shifts. It was acquired by 3G Capital and later became part of Restaurant Brands International (RBI) in 2014. RBI is a large Canadian-American multinational holding company that also owns other major brands like Tim Hortons, Popeyes, and Firehouse Subs. This ownership structure ensures that the brand remains a dominant force in the global quick-service industry well into 2026 and beyond.
