Tabasco brand hot sauce is one of the most iconic American condiments, with a history dating back to 1868. The brand was founded by Edmund McIlhenny on Avery Island, Louisiana, where he first developed the recipe using Capsicum frutescens peppers, salt, and vinegar. To this day, the product continues to be manufactured almost exclusively on Avery Island, maintaining a specialized aging process in oak barrels for up to three years.
The brand remains a remarkable example of a family-owned legacy, as it is still owned and operated by McIlhenny Company. This private corporation has been passed down through successive generations of the McIlhenny family, resisting the trend of acquisition by major multinational food conglomerates. Its global distribution is handled through various local partnerships, but the core production and brand ownership remain firmly rooted in its original Louisiana home.
