Bertolli is one of the world's most recognized brands of olive oil, with roots dating back to 1865 in Lucca, Tuscany. Founded by Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina, the company originally began as a small grocery store selling local Italian produce. It eventually became a pioneer in exporting olive oil to the Americas, establishing its status as a global household name.
Today, Bertolli olive oil is produced using olives sourced from various regions across the Mediterranean, including Italy, Spain, Greece, and Tunisia, to ensure a consistent flavor profile and quality. This blending of oils from multiple origins is a common practice in the industry for large-scale brands.
While the brand has a rich Italian heritage, its ownership has transitioned through several multinational corporations. In 2008, Unilever sold the olive oil business to Grupo SOS (now Deoleo), a Spanish multinational food company. As of 2024 and beyond, Deoleo remains the ultimate owner and global distributor of Bertolli olive oil, while the brand's frozen food and pasta sauce divisions are owned by separate entities (Conagra Brands and Mizkan, respectively).
