7-Eleven is a global convenience store chain that originated in the United States in 1927 as the Southland Ice Company. It was rebranded as 7-Eleven in 1946 to reflect its extended operating hours. The company expanded internationally, and in 1991, Ito-Yokado, a Japanese supermarket chain, acquired a 70% stake in Southland Corporation, the parent company of 7-Eleven. In 2005, Ito-Yokado increased its stake to 100%, making 7-Eleven, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Seven-Eleven Japan. Seven-Eleven Japan is a subsidiary of Seven & I Holdings Co. Ltd., a Japanese retail conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo. In March 2025, Seven & I announced a restructuring plan and appointed Stephen Dacus as its first foreign CEO to enhance shareholder value and fend off a $47 billion takeover bid from Alimentation Couche-Tard. The restructuring includes selling non-core assets and planning an IPO of its North American 7-Eleven operations by 2026. (reuters.com)
