Nespresso originated in Switzerland in 1986, when Nestlé employee Éric Favre developed a system to bring the experience of an espresso bar into the home. The brand has since become synonymous with premium portioned coffee, driving a global shift in consumption habits through its proprietary capsule technology.

Today, the manufacturing of Nespresso capsules is centered in Switzerland, with major production facilities in Orbe, Avenches, and Romont. These sites handle the roasting, grinding, and encapsulation process for worldwide distribution. The brand remains a wholly owned subsidiary of Nestlé, the world's largest food and beverage company. As of 2026, Nestlé continues to oversee Nespresso as a stand-alone global business unit, maintaining its headquarters in Vevey, Switzerland, while expanding its sustainability initiatives and recycling programs across all operating markets.
