Gevalia is a premium coffee brand that traces its heritage back to 1853 in Gävle, Sweden. Founded by Victor Theodor Engwall, the name 'Gevalia' is actually the Latin translation of Gävle. For over a century, it was a family-run business that eventually earned the prestigious title of Purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden. Its reputation for 'Always rich, never bitter' coffee helped it expand from a local Swedish roaster into an international household name.
The global ownership of the brand is currently split due to various corporate mergers. In North America, Gevalia is owned and distributed by Kraft Heinz, following the 2015 merger. Throughout the rest of the world, including its home market in Europe, the brand is owned by JDE Peet's (Jacobs Douwe Egberts), a Dutch-headquartered global coffee powerhouse. Manufacturing reflects this split, with high-end beans still roasted in Sweden for European consumers, while North American products are largely processed within local facilities to ensure freshness.
