PG Tips is one of the most iconic British tea brands, originally launched in 1930 as 'Pre-Gest-Tee' (later shortened to PG). The brand is historically significant for introducing the first tea bags to the UK market in the 1960s and later pioneered the famous pyramid-shaped tea bag, designed to allow the tea leaves more room to move and infuse like a teapot.
For nearly a century, PG Tips was a flagship brand of the Anglo-Dutch conglomerate Unilever. However, in a major restructuring of its global tea portfolio, Unilever sold the brand to its dedicated tea company, ekaterra, which was subsequently acquired by CVC Capital Partners. Today, the tea is primarily manufactured at the historic Trafford Park factory in Manchester, England, maintaining its strong British manufacturing heritage while operating under global private equity ownership.
