McVitie's Digestive biscuits are one of the world's most iconic biscuit brands, steeped in historical significance. Originally developed in 1839 by two Scottish doctors to aid digestion, the recipe was later perfected by Alexander Grant at the McVitie & Price bakery in 1892. Though the name 'Digestive' was coined due to the sodium bicarbonate used in the ingredients, the product has evolved into a staple global snack known for its semi-sweet taste and distinctive texture.
Today, while the brand remains quintessentially British, its reach is truly global. The primary manufacturing takes place in the United Kingdom, specifically at large-scale facilities like the Harlesden bakery. However, to meet international demand, production also occurs in various other regions through regional hubs and partnerships. Since 2014, the brand has been under the ownership of pladis, a global confectionery powerhouse headquartered in London.
Ownership of the brand transitioned from United Biscuits to pladis, which is a subsidiary of the Turkish conglomerate Yıldız Holding. This transition has allowed the Digestive brand to expand aggressively into emerging markets across the Middle East, Asia, and North America, solidifying its status as a leader in the global biscuit industry.
