Birkenstock is a historic German footwear brand that traces its roots back to 1774, when Johann Adam Birkenstock was registered as a 'subject and shoemaker' in local church archives. The brand became globally famous in the 1960s and 70s for its orthopedically inspired contoured cork footbeds, which were designed to promote foot health and natural gait.
Unlike many global footwear brands that have shifted production entirely to Asia, Birkenstock maintains a strong commitment to its heritage, with a significant majority of its manufacturing still taking place at its own production facilities in Germany, primarily in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, and Hesse. In 2021, a majority stake in the company was acquired by L Catterton, a private equity firm backed by the French luxury conglomerate LVMH. This transition marked a significant shift from a family-run business to a publicly traded entity on the New York Stock Exchange as of late 2023.
