Polycom was established in 1990 in the United States and became a dominant force in corporate conference telephony and unified communications. The SoundPoint range was engineered in the United States, with hardware manufacturing primarily outsourced to electronic manufacturing services in China and other Asian manufacturing hubs.

In 2018, Polycom was acquired by Plantronics, which later rebranded the combined organization as Poly. In November 2022, HP Inc. acquired Poly (Plantronics, Inc.), integrating Polycom's legacy communications hardware and video collaboration portfolio into HP's hybrid work solutions line.
