Its origins trace back to 1941 when Jack Bateman founded Factory Canteens Ltd to provide catering services to workers during wartime Britain. The enterprise evolved into Bateman Catering, which was later acquired by Grand Metropolitan in the late 1960s before undergoing a management buyout in 1987 that formed the modern Compass Group.
