Waterstones is the United Kingdom's leading high street bookseller, operating hundreds of shops across the UK, Ireland, and continental Europe. Founded in 1982 by Tim Waterstone, the brand revolutionized book retailing by introducing organized, large-scale bookstores with highly knowledgeable staff. While Waterstones does not manufacture products in a single facility, its private-label stationery and gift items are sourced from various global manufacturing hubs, while the books it retails are produced by thousands of independent and conglomerate publishers worldwide.

Ownership of the brand has shifted significantly over the decades. Originally an independent venture, it was sold to WHSmith and later to the HMV Group. In 2011, it was acquired by A&NN Capital Management Fund. Today, the brand is under the ultimate ownership of Elliott Investment Management, an American investment firm that also owns other major book retailers like Barnes & Noble. This consolidation has helped Waterstones maintain its market presence against digital competition by focusing on the physical browse-and-buy experience.
