Giro was founded in 1985 by Jim Gentes in Santa Cruz, California. The brand made its name by revolutionizing the cycling world with the Prolight, one of the first lightweight, high-performance helmets that combined aerodynamics with ventilation. Giro's reputation was further cemented during the 1989 Tour de France when Greg LeMond used a Giro Aerohead to win the race by a historic eight seconds.

Over the decades, the company expanded from cycling into snow sports, launching the influential 'Nine' snow helmet in 1999. Although originally an independent American startup, the brand has undergone several ownership changes. It was first acquired by Bell Sports in 1996, which later became part of BRG Sports. In 2016, Vista Outdoor purchased the brand portfolio for $400 million. As of 2024–2026, Giro is a key brand under Revelyst, Inc., a standalone public company spun off from Vista Outdoor's outdoor products segment.

While Giro's research, design, and engineering traditionally took place in its 'Dome' facility in California, mass production is primarily conducted in specialized manufacturing hubs in China and other parts of Asia to reach global scale. In recent years, the company has integrated more closely with sister brands like Fox Racing to streamline operations.
