This affordability allowed books to be sold in department stores and five-and-dimes rather than just traditional bookstores, making literature accessible to a wider audience of families.

While the books were originally printed in Racine, Wisconsin, modern production occurs in various locations globally to meet international demand. The series has featured works by legendary illustrators and authors such as Richard Scarry and Margaret Wise Brown. After several changes in corporate ownership over the decades, the brand was acquired by Random House in 2001 and remains a key imprint under the Penguin Random House umbrella, continuing to publish both classic titles and new licensed stories.
