The term 'Fleisch' is the German word for 'meat' and is used as a category or part of a brand name for various meat processing companies across Europe. In the context of large-scale meat production in Germany, the industry is dominated by several key players such as Tönnies (recently reorganized under Premium Food Group), Westfleisch, and Vion. These companies handle everything from slaughtering to the production of consumer-ready meat products and sausages.

Ownership in the German meat sector has undergone significant consolidation. For instance, the Tönnies Group, a family-owned business founded in 1971, remains a market leader in pork processing. Another major entity, The Family Butchers (TFB), was formed in 2020 through the merger of Reinert and Kemper. More recently, in 2025, the Premium Food Group (formerly Tönnies) entered a strategic partnership to take a majority stake in TFB, further centralizing the market. Manufacturing typically occurs at specialized local facilities close to livestock sources to ensure freshness and quality standards like QS (Quality and Security) and ITW (Animal Welfare Initiative).
