Hagelslag chocolate sprinkles

Hagelslag is a quintessential Dutch confectionery product consisting of small grains of chocolate or sugar used primarily as a bread topping. The concept was originally invented in the Netherlands in the early 20th century. While several brands produce hagelslag, the most iconic and original creator is Venz, which first mass-produced chocolate hagelslag in 1936.

Today, the manufacturing of hagelslag remains primarily concentrated in the Netherlands to satisfy high domestic demand and cultural tradition. The primary brand, Venz, along with other major labels like De Ruijter, is now under the umbrella of international food conglomerates. These brands are currently owned by Kraft Heinz, following a series of mergers and acquisitions in the food industry. This ownership structure places the ultimate strategic management of these traditional Dutch brands in the United States, although production facilities continue to operate locally within the Benelux region to maintain quality and authenticity.
