Zinfandel red wine

Zinfandel is a variety of black-skinned wine grape that is primarily grown in California. While it has become a staple of American viticulture since its arrival in the mid-19th century, DNA fingerprinting has revealed that it is genetically identical to the Italian Primitivo and the Croatian grape Crljenak Kaštelanski.

Today, the production of Zinfandel is dominated by American wineries, particularly in regions like Lodi, Napa Valley, and Sonoma. There is no single owner of the 'Zinfandel' name as it refers to the grape variety itself, but the brand landscape includes major players such as E. & J. Gallo, Treasury Wine Estates, and Constellation Brands. Each of these corporations manages various labels that specialize in different styles of Zinfandel, from bold reds to the sweeter White Zinfandel rosés.
