Southern Comfort whiskey liqueur

Southern Comfort, often colloquially known as SoCo, is a storied American spirit with roots stretching back to 1874. It was originally created by bartender Martin Wilkes Heron in New Orleans, Louisiana, as a solution to the harsh taste of unrefined whiskies common at the time. By infusing bourbon with a secret blend of fruits and spices—including vanilla, citrus, and honey—Heron developed a smooth, accessible liqueur that he initially branded as 'Cuffs and Buttons' before renaming it to Southern Comfort. The brand moved to Memphis and later St. Louis, gaining international acclaim after winning a gold medal at the 1904 World's Fair.

Over the decades, the brand's recipe and ownership shifted significantly. After Prohibition, it was revived by Francis Fowler and eventually acquired by Brown-Forman in 1979. During this era, the base spirit was often changed to a neutral grain spirit with whiskey flavorings. However, since the brand's acquisition by the Sazerac Company in 2016, there has been a concerted effort to return to its 'Big Easy' heritage. This included a major reformulation in 2017 to reintroduce real whiskey as the base spirit, aligning the product more closely with its original 19th-century New Orleans recipe. Today, it is primarily produced in Louisville, Kentucky, under the stewardship of Sazerac.
