Frito-Lay is one of the world's most recognizable snack food companies, formed through the historic merger of two iconic American brands: The Frito Company and H.W. Lay & Company. The Frito Company was founded in 1932 by C.E. Doolin in San Antonio, Texas, after he purchased a specialized corn chip recipe. In that same year, Herman Lay started a snack distribution business in Nashville, Tennessee, eventually acquiring the manufacturing plant to create H.W. Lay & Company.
In 1961, the two companies combined their resources to form Frito-Lay, Inc. Just four years later, in 1965, the company merged with Pepsi-Cola to create PepsiCo, which remains its ultimate owner today. Frito-Lay operates a massive global manufacturing network, with dozens of production plants located across North America and international markets to ensure product freshness.
Today, Frito-Lay manages a massive portfolio of leading brands including Lay's, Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos, and Fritos. While headquartered in Plano, Texas, the brand maintains a 'seed to shelf' strategy, often utilizing local ingredients and manufacturing facilities in the regions where their products are sold, making its production footprint truly global.
