LEGO is a globally recognized brand of plastic construction toys, fundamentally centered on interlocking bricks. The brand's journey began in 1932 in Billund, Denmark, when cabinetmaker Ole Kirk Christiansen started creating wooden toys after the Great Depression affected his carpentry business. The name 'LEGO' is derived from the Danish phrase Leg Godt, which translates to 'Play Well'. In 1947, the company transitioned from wood to plastic, adopting injection-molding technology and eventually patenting the iconic stud-and-tube coupling system in 1958, which ensures the 'clutch power' the bricks are famous for today.

Manufacturing for LEGO is strategically decentralized to serve major global markets efficiently. Primary molding and production facilities are located in Billund (Denmark), Nyíregyháza (Hungary), Monterrey (Mexico), and Jiaxing (China), with packaging and specialized processing centers in Kladno (Czech Republic). As part of its long-term growth and sustainability strategy, the company is also establishing new carbon-neutral factories in Vietnam and Virginia, USA, to bolster its supply chain for the late 2020s and beyond.

Ownership of the LEGO Group has remained strictly within the founding family for four generations. The brand is currently managed by the private investment firm KIRKBI A/S, which holds a 75% stake on behalf of the Kirk Kristiansen family. The remaining 25% is owned by the LEGO Foundation, a charitable entity dedicated to promoting development through play. This private, family-led structure allows the company to focus on long-term sustainability goals, such as their 2026 targets for increasing recycled and renewable materials in brick production.
