Method was founded in 2000 by Eric Ryan and Adam Lowry in San Francisco, California. The brand initially gained popularity by focusing on stylish, non-toxic, and eco-friendly cleaning solutions that consumers would feel comfortable leaving on their countertops. In 2012, Method merged with the Belgian eco-cleaning brand Ecover to form the global group 'People Against Dirty.'

In late 2017, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when it was acquired by the American consumer goods giant S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc. This acquisition brought the boutique 'green' brand under the umbrella of a major multinational corporation headquartered in Racine, Wisconsin. While the brand maintains its commitment to plant-based and biodegradable ingredients, its ownership by a larger parent company has sparked debates regarding its ethical independence.

Manufacturing for the North American market is centered at a state-of-the-art, LEED Platinum-certified factory in the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, often referred to as the 'Soapbox.' This facility is notable for its sustainable architecture, featuring a wind turbine and solar panels. For European and other international markets, production may occur at the Ecover facility in Malle, Belgium, or through other global SC Johnson supply chains.
