Founded in 1898 by Hans Deuter in Augsburg-Oberhausen, Germany, Deuter is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious manufacturers of backpacks and outdoor equipment. The brand gained early fame by supplying the Bavarian Royal Mail and providing gear for various high-altitude mountaineering expeditions, including the first ascent of the Eiger North Face.

Starting in the mid-1990s, Deuter shifted a significant portion of its production to Vietnam, establishing a long-term partnership with Duke Co. Ltd. to ensure consistent quality and social responsibility standards. This partnership has allowed Deuter to scale production while maintaining high technical specifications for their air-comfort systems and ergonomic designs.

While the brand maintains its design and engineering headquarters in Gersthofen, Germany, its ownership transformed over the years. In 2006, Deuter was acquired by the Schwan-STABILO Group. This acquisition integrated Deuter into the group's outdoor division, providing stable corporate backing from a multi-generational German family business known globally for its stationery products.
