Weather Report was an American jazz fusion band active from 1970 to 1986. Founded in New York City, the band was co-led by Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul and American saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Over its 16-year career, Weather Report explored various types of music, predominantly centered on jazz, but also incorporating elements of art music, ethnic music, R&B, funk, and rock. The band was known for its improvisational approach, featuring continuous improvisation by every member, and for abandoning the traditional "soloist/accompaniment" demarcation of straight-ahead jazz. The band's lineup included notable musicians such as bassist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Peter Erskine. Weather Report disbanded in 1986, and its members pursued various solo projects thereafter.
