Founded in Copenhagen in 1872 by Edvard Galle and Hans Christian Jessen, the brand quickly established itself as a staple of the Danish breakfast table and earned the prestigious title of Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court.

Today, the brand is owned by Toms Gruppen A/S (Toms Group), the largest confectionery producer in Denmark. Production typically takes place in the Toms Group facilities in Hvidovre, near Copenhagen. The brand maintains its strong Danish identity, continuing to operate under the umbrella of Toms, which is ultimately owned by the Gerda and Victor B. Strand Foundation, ensuring that the company remains on Danish hands.
