Bärenmarke is one of Germany's most iconic dairy brands, widely recognized for its mascot—a friendly bear—and its long-standing association with high-quality coffee milk. The brand's history dates back to 1892, founded by hotelier César Ritz in Bern, Switzerland, as the Berneralpen Milchgesellschaft. The bear symbol was chosen as it is the heraldic animal of Bern. In 1905, the company expanded to Biessenhofen, Germany, and the Bärenmarke name was officially introduced for condensed milk in 1912.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned through major industry players over the decades. It was a core part of the Nestlé portfolio for many years after Nestlé acquired its parent group, Ursina-Franck, in 1973. However, in 2003, as part of a strategic shift, Nestlé sold the brand to the German dairy cooperative Hochwald Foods GmbH. Today, the product is primarily manufactured in Germany, specifically at Hochwald's facilities such as the one in Mühldorf am Inn, ensuring it remains a staple of German domestic dairy production.
