Originally producing a variety of goods including artificial honey and even floor wax, the company shifted its focus entirely to fruit-based products in the early 20th century.

Today, the manufacturing of Schwartau products remains concentrated in Bad Schwartau, Schleswig-Holstein, where the company operates multiple production sites. The 'Samt' (meaning velvet) sub-brand was specifically developed to offer a smooth, creamy texture for consumers who prefer spreads without bits of fruit or seeds.

Since 2002, Schwartauer Werke has been a key subsidiary of the Hero Group, an international food company headquartered in Switzerland. The Hero Group itself is majority-owned by the family of Dr. Arend Oetker, maintaining a strong link to the brand's German heritage while benefiting from a global distribution network.
