Hereford Mappa Mundi

The Hereford Mappa Mundi is a world-renowned historical artifact, distinguished as the largest complete medieval map of the world still in existence. Created around the year 1300, this extraordinary piece of cartography is drawn on a single large sheet of vellum (calfskin) and stands as a testament to the spiritual and geographical worldview of the late 13th century. It was originally designed not for navigation, but as an educational and religious tool, featuring over 500 illustrations including biblical events, classical mythology, and exotic creatures alongside approximately 420 cities and towns.

While the map's artistic roots are strongly associated with Lincoln due to the detailed depiction of Lincoln Cathedral, it has been housed in Hereford Cathedral for over 700 years. The map is attributed to Richard of Haldingham (also known as Richard de Bello), a prebendary of Lincoln and later Hereford. Throughout its history, it has survived periods of neglect, concealment during the Interregnum, and even a proposal for sale in 1988, which was ultimately halted by public outcry and significant donations. Today, it remains under the stewardship of the Mappa Mundi Trust and is exhibited within a dedicated library at Hereford Cathedral, continuing to serve as a primary source for medieval scholarship.
