Alva Sardines

Alva is a historic Portuguese brand of canned seafood, specifically known for its sardines. The brand has a heritage dating back to the early 20th century, with trademark records in Portugal appearing as early as 1911 under J. Paula Antunes Lda. Historically, the brand was associated with several Portuguese canneries, most notably Conservas Alva, Lda.

In contemporary times, Alva products are produced by Fábrica de Conservas A Poveira S.A., a major seafood cannery based in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal. A Poveira was founded in 1938 and has grown into one of the most significant exporters of Portuguese tinned fish.

Ownership of the brand and its manufacturer shifted significantly in 2019 when the Spanish multinational seafood group, Frinsa del Noroeste S.A., acquired a majority stake in A Poveira. By 2021, Frinsa had secured full control (75% to 100% depending on the specific subsidiary structure) of the Portuguese company. Today, Alva is positioned as part of the broader Frinsa portfolio, often distributed internationally through Frinsa's global network, including Frinsa UK Ltd in the United Kingdom.
