Founded in 1898 by Hans Deuter in Augsburg-Oberhausen, Germany, Deuter began as a supplier of mailbags for the Bavarian Royal Mail. Over the following century, the company evolved into a world-renowned manufacturer of technical backpacks, sleeping bags, and outdoor accessories. Deuter has been responsible for several industry landmarks, including the first nylon backpacks in 1968 and the revolutionary 'Aircomfort' mesh carry system patented in 1984.

Today, Deuter is headquartered in Gersthofen, Germany. While the brand maintains its rigorous German engineering and design standards, its production has expanded globally. Notably, Deuter has maintained an exclusive manufacturing partnership for over 25 years with a single producer in Vietnam, which handles the majority of its backpack production under high transparency and social standards. In 2006, the brand was acquired by the Schwan-STABILO Group, a family-owned German conglomerate, and it now operates as a core brand within their Outdoor division alongside names like ORTOVOX.
