Shopify is a leading global e-commerce platform originally developed in Ottawa, Canada. The brand’s journey began in 2004 when its founders, Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake, attempted to open an online snowboard shop called Snowdevil. Dissatisfied with the existing e-commerce software available at the time, Lütke, a programmer by trade, built his own bespoke platform. Realizing the potential of the software itself, the team pivoted from selling snowboards to providing a comprehensive commerce solution for other entrepreneurs, officially launching Shopify in 2006.

As a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider, Shopify does not have a traditional physical manufacturing origin. Its products—comprising software code, digital infrastructure, and AI-driven tools—are developed by a global workforce. While its primary research and development hubs are located in Canada (Ottawa, Toronto, and Waterloo), it maintains a significant engineering and operational presence in the United States, Ireland, Lithuania, and Singapore. The platform powers millions of businesses across more than 175 countries, ranging from solo entrepreneurs to global enterprises.

Ownership of Shopify remains public, as the company has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Toronto Stock Exchange since 2015. As of 2026, the company continues to operate under a dual-class share structure that preserves significant voting influence for its founder and CEO, Tobias Lütke. Major institutional investors, such as Capital Research and Management Company, hold substantial equity, but the company remains an independent Canadian multinational, steering its own strategic direction in the evolving landscape of 'Agentic Commerce' and AI-driven retail infrastructure.
